Feel free to touch: The Sinnesspiele experience centre in the Freiraum building:
See like an eagle, run like a deer and jump like a hare – at the nature experience centre on the Ahorn

Taking your children to an exhibition is not always particularly fun. Often, you are banned from touching anything and have to keep a reasonable distance from the exhibits. The Sinnesspiele in the Freiraum building on the Ahorn plateau offers precisely the opposite: here, touching, testing and exploring are not just allowed... they are encouraged. Children learn about the alpine and animal world of Mayrhofen through play. They can use all their senses to discover how different record-holders from nature perceive and master their environments. A quiz guides visitors through the individual sensory stations of the nature experience centre. And at the end, a prize is even available. By combining this highlight with Jazz Brunch or other delicacies offered by the Freiraum café-bistro, even mums and dads are in their element.

The inaugural ‘Rise & Fall’: no manoeuvring, just full throttle
Ski mountaineering, paragliding, mountain biking and skiing: on 15 December 2012 in Mayrhofen

No manoeuvring, no catching your breath. No mercy. Just full throttle. That is all that counts at Rise & Fall in Mayrhofen, the extraordinary stage race in the mountains. Every participant pushes it to the limit on both the climb and the descent – while keeping their competitors in sight at all times. “That’s precisely what makes it so exciting”, comments head organiser Christoph Ebenbichler, the brainchild behind the event to be held on 15 December in Mayrhofen in the Zillertal Valley. This will mark the start to the season like never before. The ‘Rise & Fall’ teams are made up of four athletes: a biker, a paraglider, a ski mountaineer and a skier or snowboarder. The race motto: four people, one team, no mercy. The spectators are up-close to the action as the athletes fight for every second. “No one wants to lose face. Everyone pushes it to their limits,” states Benedikt Ebenbichler with conviction. The Ironman participant and brother of the organiser will himself take part on his mountain bike – and enjoy a completely new experience to that which he is used to as an endurance specialist.

The CUBE Bike Days took place from the 21st to 24th June 2012 for a second time in Mayrhofen, Zillertal. The number of participants were double to those of last year, proving that this event concept of bike tests, guided tours, riding technique courses with CUBE action team riders as well as sport and lifestyle away from performance orientated racing events is a winning combination.
„It’s all about demonstrating the many facets of this sport to mountain bike enthusiasts in a relaxed environment. There is no better place for this than in a diverse holiday region such as Mayrhofen“, commented Claus Wachsmann, marketing director at CUBE and mastermind behind the original Bike Days concept.

Time, peace and relaxation
Advent in Mayrhofen: the way christmas used to be

Time is a gift – maybe one of the most valuable gifts there is. And it is intimately associated with inner peace, reflection and moments of joy. But all of these need the right environment. In Zillertal at Christmas, the locals slow things down and dedicate themselves to creating this environment. They celebrate Christmas the time-honoured way and remind themselves of its true meaning in the weeks before. During Advent, tradition is paramount at the Waldfestplatz square in Mayrhofen. It is a place of contemplation where guests marvel, relax and enjoy themselves. Candlelight, open fires, theatre performances and traditional Zillertal songs are the order of the day. One of these songs is already known the world over: “Silent Night” was made famous by the Strasser family of singers. A traditional musical in the Europahaus tells their story.

Explore the side valleys around Mayrhofen with Peter Habeler
Rediscover the beauty in simplicity

Expert mountaineer Peter Habeler, 68, has just returned to Mayrhofen from Nepal, where he was part of an ascent to the Mount Everest base camp. It was here, in 1978, that Habeler and Reinhold Messner embarked on a remarkable expedition: the first ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. Today, the base camp has grown into a tent city which has little in common with the simpler conditions back then. “Nothing of the solitude remains,” comments Habeler, who is originally from Mayrhofen. And this is why he loves the Zillertal valley. Because despite its seamless infrastructure and many hotels and holidaymakers, Habeler says that “the valley has retained its unspoilt character” – especially the four side valleys of Zillergrund, Zemmgrund, Stilluptal and Tuxertal. Peter Habeler tells us why each of these side valleys is well worth a look – for young and old, climbers, hikers and bikers alike.

The ´Adlerbühne´flying display area on Ahorn mountain in Mayrhofen - Eye to eye with the kings of the sky

A gentle breeze caresses the mountainside. Suddenly, eagles, buzzards and eagle owls swoop down, just above the ground, making the hair on the back of the neck stand up. It’s moments like this that captivate entire audiences on the Adlerbühne (Eagle Stage) observation deck. Just like the spectacular aerial displays of these graceful and grandiose creatures. The displays, which take place at 2pm, Saturdays to Thursdays, attract up to 800 visitors at a time. The falconer and brains behind the Adlerbühne, Didi Wechselberger, coordinates the birds with his son Thomas and English-speaking falconer colleague Roy Butterfield. Despite the size of the audience, guests quickly become an integral part of the flying displays. Moments like this are unforgettable – when birds of prey are that close.

Surprising, the small things that make a summer

Sometimes it’s the little things and those special moments that make life that bit more enjoyable and turn a break in the mountains into a memory to be cherished forever. Children simply can’t get enough of the Funballz on Penken reservoir. Hop into the huge inflated plastic ball and frolic with abandon over the surface of the reservoir. Adults never forget the beaming smiles and laughter of their children. Then they all take to their bikes and follow the stunning new Penken trails, easy even for occasional cyclists. Things are a tad more strenuous on the two narrow trails, or “singletracks”, the Almdudler Stairway to Heaven and the Almdudler Highway to Hell. What better way for mountain bikers to pant and pedal while the kids enjoy a scenic walk through the countryside or watch the paragliders take to the skies. Nature can be just as relaxing on Mount Ahorn, the leisure mountain. It all starts with a breakfast at dawn, against the breathtaking backdrop of the Zillertal Alps. Next, the Leisure Trail, Ahornsee lake and the highlight of the day: the Adlerbühne birds of prey display up on Ahorn, where the kings of the air swoop enticingly close. And if there’s a sudden change in the weather, the Ahornbahn cable car transforms into a hovering café – an attraction in itself.

Absorbing such information through the senses hasn’t been part of the human experience – until now. Starting 11 June 2011, everyone can take part in “sensory games” at the new Nature Experience Centre at Freiraum (“free space”) in Mayrhofen. Amateur researchers both young and young at heart can embark on entertaining journeys of discovery, learn about all kinds of flora and fauna feats, and explore all kinds of plant and animal kingdoms that call the Ahorn plateau home. In fact, there is no better location for this nature exhibition than Freiraum. Opened in 2010 as a convention and event location with state-of-the-art facilities, Freiraum inspires visitors to explore their creativity. It’s perfecting for (re)discovering the world through the five senses. What’s more, the cosy Freiraum café is the ideal setting to relax and take in the impressive panorama.

Advent in Mayrhofen promises enjoyment, rest and wonder

Steeped in tradition, Maryhofen’s Advent Market takes its cues from the authentic approach of the Strasser family. This troupe of singers popularised the song ‘Silent Night – Holy Night’ and helped spread it far beyond the Zillertal – to the four corners of the globe! Candlelight and roaring fireplaces (without an electric socket in sight) add to the ambiance. Tranquillity is the common theme throughout this year’s events for young and old alike. Living nativity scenes and stage plays provide a welcome change of pace, and Zillertal music will warm hearts of all ages. Situated on Waldfestplatz, the Mayrhofen Advent Market is part of the Advent Austria initiative founded in 2007.

A day’s skiing crammed with Mayrhofen memories

You pull back the curtains. During the night, another fresh blanket of snow has fallen on Mayrhofen. A feast for the eyes
– and a green light to all skiers and snowboarders to get out of bed. Rise and shine, and pull on your skiing gear. As you
do so, you mentally walk through the highlights of the day to come: carving down mouthwateringly challenging slopes on
Mount Penken – the ‘action mountain’; a short sharp shot of adrenalin descending the harakiri, a cult ski slope (in fact
the steepest in the whole of Austria). Then there’s the deep powder snow and long jumps in Vans Penken Park. Not
forgetting a journey on Austria’s biggest gondola lift up onto Mount Ahorn, the place to chill out and enjoy the après-ski
atmosphere of the White Lounge igloos. In fact there are 10 igloo suites for you to stay the night and look back on an
unforgettable day in the mountains.

The “HarakiriI” in Mayrhofen – Austria’s steepest ski s
lope

It’s already a legend. With an average incline of 78 per cent, this slope is steeper than an “inrun”. Yes, that’s the
starting ramp used in ski jumping. Even the most seasoned skier finds the Harakiri challenging. Whether you take on the
Harakiri on two skis or a snowboard, take a deep breath – a very deep breath. Looking down from the highest point, the
eye quickly focuses, like looking through a tunnel. Your belief in your own ability must be as clear as the white snow
below. So don’t come here if you’re a beginner, or inexperienced on the slopes – if you are, this part of Penken “Action
Mountain” is a no-go area.

The Ahornbahn in Mayrhofen
Austria’s biggest gondola car, and the country’s first high-flying bar

The Ahornbahn in Mayrhofen is already a defining feature of Zillertal. It only takes 6½ minutes for this queen of ski lifts
to transport 160 people up onto Mount Ahorn, the “Leisure Mountain”. When it was built, the engineers were at pains to
make sure the sophisticated lift blended in harmoniously with the countryside. Their exemplary efforts, and the state-ofthe-
art technology used on the lift, have already earned the Ahornbahn two major architectural prizes. Within seconds
of starting the 2000 metre high journey, passengers in Austria’s biggest gondola car can’t help but notice that these are
the most unique 40 square metres on the whole of Leisure Mountain.

Despite this, the Mayrhofen local is still passionate about the snow-clad peaks of Zillertal. And his fascination is shared by guests in his mountaineering and skiing school.

Especially if you work in a Zillertal schnapps distillery. Distilleries throughout the Mayrhofen area value the indigenous plants as a hand-picked ingredient used in schnapps – a high alcohol drink, made with all types of plant extracts and fresh mountain water.

Ahorn, the leisure mountain, and Penken, the action mountain – one quiet and laid-back, the other wild and bursting
with energy. On Ahorn, Mother Nature rules supreme. With the idyllic Lake Ahornsee and the new circular leisure trail,
the leisure mountain is a paradise for families, nature-lovers, and anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet. Not at all
like Penken – where action, speed and adrenaline rule the day. Brand new single trails for mountain bikers, two
climbing zones, launch platforms for paragliders, and countless hiking routes – all easily reached via lifts and cable
cars with plenty of room for sports equipment. Ahorn and Penken – two very different mountains that spell a unique

The farmers are happy for them to laze about doing nothing. It’s good for the milk and cheese. The other locals like it too. In fact everyone adores the rich flavoured taste of the natural mountain butter, cheese, ham and farmer’s loaves. Just like generations before them.

Snowbombing 2009:
Fatboy Slim and Grandmaster Flash mix it up in Mayrhofen

Two gods of club culture will be rocking the Zillertal in 2009, from 28 March – 4
April. The occasion? The tenth anniversary of Snowbombing – the biggest and
most unconventional music festival in the Alps. Fatboy Slim, pioneer of big beat,
will make the Tyrolean mountains shake. And Grandmaster Flash, one of the
inventors of hip-hop, will take guests on a musical trip through time into the
history of hip-hop – the world’s largest youth movement. ‘Snowbombing’ in
Mayrhofen is nothing less than a reinvention of ‘après-ski’: make the most of
smooth snow and spring sunshine on Mayrhofen’s 157km of pistes during the
day – and dance the night away to urban club sounds, in rustic log cabins and
wild igloo parties, 2000 metres above sea level.

Two years after the official opening, the Ahornbahn in Mayrhofen is already a defining feature of Zillertal. It only takes 6½ minutes for this queen of ski lifts to transport 160 people up onto Mount Ahorn, the “Leisure Mountain”. When it was built, the engineers were at pains to make sure the sophisticated lift blended in harmoniously with the countryside. Their exemplary efforts, and the state-of-the-art technology used on the lift, have already earned the Ahornbahn two major architectural prizes. Within seconds of starting the 2000 metre high journey, passengers in Austria’s biggest gondola car can’t help but notice that these are the most unique 40 square metres on the whole of Leisure Mountain.

The “Harakiri” in Mayrhofen – Austria’s steepest ski slope

It’s already a legend. With an average incline of 78 per cent, this slope is steeper
than an “inrun”. Yes, that’s the starting ramp used in ski jumping. Even the most
seasoned skier finds the Harakiri challenging. Whether you take on the Harakiri
on two skis or a snowboard, take a deep breath – a very deep breath. Looking
down from the highest point, the eye quickly focuses, like looking through a
tunnel. Your belief in your own ability must be as clear as the white snow below.
So don’t come here if you’re a beginner, or inexperienced on the slopes – if you
are, this part of Penken “Action Mountain” is a no-go area.

Amateurs and aces at home in Vans Penken Park Mayrhofen

The next winter season in one of Europe’s largest snowparks is just around the corner – and anticipation of freestylers far and wide is reaching fever pitch. With five distinct lines to choose from, snowboarders can mix and match to their heart’s content – and let’s not forget the halfpipe. No wonder Vans Penken Park in Mayrhofen is considered the epicentre of the international freestyle scene, setting standards across Europe in terms of performance. Even better: in the Winter 2008/09 season, freestyle novices can take advantage of a completely redesigned “kids’ park”. The obstacle course features nine new challenges for beginners to get some experience under their belts – or snowsuits.

The Mayrhofen White Lounge – sizzling fun for chilly igloo
evenings

If igloos could talk…oh, the things they’d have to say about the Mayrhofen White
Lounge, perched 2000m above sea level! These ten stylish igloo suites would
positively gush over the romantic candlelight dinners, marriage proposals and
flutes of champagne. They’d also regale you with tales of newfound love and
unforgettable nights spent in a cosy VAUDE twin sleeping bag. Or rejuvenating
trips to the sauna, complete with a panoramic view of the snow-covered Zillertal
valley landscape. And once a week, the igloos could fill you in on Zillertal’s
hottest party. Not forgetting, of course, to tell you about how those intrepid souls
venture forth from the igloo village – bright-eyed from a good night’s sleep – to
make their first tracks on the freshly-groomed and empty Ahorn pistes.

exclusive
The Winter season kicks off with delights old and new

Take two mountains bristling with character and add plenty of leisure time
activities to suit every taste, leaving nothing to be desired – that’s winter in
Mayrhofen. The cold months here draw one and all to the Ahorn “Leisure
Mountain” and the Penken “Activity Mountain” with not-to-be-topped
opportunities such as romantic igloo evenings 2000m above sea level or the
ultimate in partying – Snowbombing – where the best DJs have you kicking up
your heels until dawn. Don’t forget about the 157km of pistes (guaranteed to be
snow-swept), the legendary Harakiri slope, and, of course, the charm of the
Tyrolean mountains plus countless improvements and additions for a winter
holiday that’s more like a dream come true.

Ahorn mountain is booked up for the entire 2008 summer season. For the indulgent
among us. For nature lovers. For the romantic at heart. Stress? Up here, on the
doorstep of Mayrhofen? Never heard of it. Wend your away along mile after mile of
hiking trails, ascend to original Tyrolean alpine huts and you’ll see straight away:
in these parts, the ‘stress’ is placed on relaxation. As springs moves to summer,
even the cable car unwinds you – as it weaves its way up high. The Ahornbahn,
Austria’s biggest gondola car, not only offers plenty of space to walk around, if the
sun should temporarily stop shining it quickly transforms into a cosy alpine café.
What a welcome change, with speciality coffees and freshly baked cakes.

The Mayrhofen White Lounge – memorable nights in a snow igloo, 2000 metres up

It may take a while to adjust to the dim candlelight but you soon start to make out shapes, shadows flickering across soft snowy sculptures – you’re inside a snowy cave. Outside your igloo suite you embark on a day in the deep snow of the Mayrhofen mountains. Caressed by the warm winter sunshine, 2000 metres above sea level, cradled in every corner by the breathtaking peaks of the upper Zillertal valley, the residents of the igloo village greet the day from their sun-drenched deckchairs before taking to the slopes of the Ahorn. The pistes are still empty at this early hour and immaculately prepared by the snow groomer.
Back at the igloo delicious drinks await you, plus crazy parties and probably the most exclusive accommodation in the Alps – complete with sauna, a dining igloo and breakfast. Opening at January 2008, the White Lounge on the Ahorn Leisure Mountain promises the perfect end to a perfect day’s skiing.

Vans partners with the Mayrhofen snow park

Pure freestyle mania – that’s what snowboarders and freeskiers can look forward to in the Winter 2007/08 season at Mayrhofen. To kick off the new partnership with Vans, a highly trusted label in boardsports, designers revamped the snow park to include demanding obstacles and turned an entire piste into a giant snow park complete with a ‘chill-out area’. Now, with its new rails, kickers, fun boxes and frames – plus four distinct lines (Public, Fun, Pro and Jib) to let loose on, the Vans Penken Park is ideal for beginners and professionals. The four-seat Sunjet chairlift ascends to lofty heights; perhaps Funjet would be a more apt name as it spans the entire length of the park, so you can get in plenty of runs and delight in breathtaking views. With Vans on board as partner for the snow park, Mayrhofen is perfectly positioned to establish itself as an international mecca in the freestyle scene.

24 hours in the winter wonderland of Mayrhofen

For winter sports enthusiasts the day begins up on Penken Action Mountain – under the morning sun tackling the Harakiri, Austria’s steepest ski slope (and now an international cult must-ski). By noon you are savouring freestyle heaven – strutting your stuff on the jibs in the Vans Penken Park (which has now also been upgraded and enlarged). By the afternoon join other snow pilgrims, probably up on Ahorn Leisure Mountain, cruising down the wide slopes before crowning a day for the memory books – watching the sun go down from the Mayrhofen Cable Car’s White Lounge. Relax, enjoy a drink, and chill to hot music. To round off your stay in Mayrhofen to perfection, you could even spend a night in the sophistication of sculpted ‘igloo suites’. Zillertal’s world-famous winter resort has everything you could wish for on a wonderful winter’s day in the mountains.

An old farmhouse writing the history books

To all intents and purposes, the charming old Strasser Häusl farmhouse near Mayrhofen would be like many of the other old farmhouses dotted throughout Zillertal – if it weren’t for the tale about the Strasser children. It was they who made the Christmas carol “Silent Night, Holy Night” famous the world over, by performing it at concerts throughout Germany.

Peter Habeler has already conquered five eight-thousanders – together with Reinhold Messner, he was the first to scale Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen. Despite this, the Mayrhofen local is still passionate about the snow-clad peaks of Zillertal. And his fascination is shared by guests in his mountaineering and skiing school.

Between the first spring sunshine and the wonderlands of winter

Walking, wellness and winter sports. Between the centre of Mayrhofen, 630m above sea level and the heights of the Hintertux glacier (way up at 3250m), spring in the mountains offers plenty of exercise and relaxation. Even if, down below, the first warmth of summer is beckoning, up above winter still casts its wonderful spell. Mayrhofen in the spring – between dew-drenched meadows and deep, crisp, untouched snow.

Bulging calf muscles and booming parties
Cult biking event Jeantex Bike Transalp due to stop over in Mayrhofen

For mountain bikers, it’s the stuff that dreams are made of. Shady biking trails through tranquil mountain glens, sleepy villages peppered with traditional farmyards. Romantic alpine huts couched in open meadows. Brisk walks over and beyond the tree line. High above, the snow-clad 3000m peaks of the Zillertal Alps positively glow to the sound of mountain bikers battling every metre up the mountain – to the pass, where they dismount, hoist up their bikes and sweat it out on foot. By now the thigh muscles are steaming hot. And the pulse is doing 180. But it’s worth it – for the feeling of elation when you reach the Pfitscher Joch, 2252m above sea level, and hurtle back down the mountain, a bike ride of more then 60 kilometres. On this, the 10th staging of the legendary Jeantex Bike Transalp – one of the most famous and demanding mountain bike races in the world – the stretch from Mayrhofen to Bressanone on the south Tyrolean side of the Alps is the ultimate in mountain biking. To bikers, the crossover point on the roof of the Alps at Pfitscher Joch is already a legend in itself.

Summer holidays in Mayrhofen:
Nature all around. Plenty of sport. Masses of entertainment

Hikers love this place. Bikers love this place. Mountaineers are inspired by it. It’s pure indulgence. The upper Zillertal around Mayrhofen has a veritable treasure trove of holiday ideas – inspiring hiking areas, picturesque alpine huts, welcoming traditional guesthouses, magnificent biking trails and so many different ways to ‘get away from it all’ including paragliding and climbing. If holidays are all about switching off and enjoying yourself, there are also plenty of ways to while away the hours with sophisticated spa hotels and cosy, traditional inns serving typical Zillertal cuisine.
