A new season of Freeridecross gets underway in four skiing areas in the Alpine region
What do the skiing areas of Sudelfeld (Germany), Silvretta Montafon (Austria), Mottolino/Livigno and Santa Croce/Alta Badia (both Italy) all have in common? They may differ in many ways, but they are all pioneers in one field: all four destinations are offering Freeridecross this winter. Together with the Allgäu-based company Schneestern, which developed the concept and created the courses in the snow, their aim is to offer more than groomed slopes. It’s all about fun and action – based on the motto: “Feel the Flow”.
Freeridecross takes ideas from freeriding and freestyle and puts them on a safe slope. Classic elements of ski- and snowboard-cross such as rollers, banks, drops and jumps as well as near-natural obstacles create a sporting, action-packed incentive for all target groups as well as promoting creativity. With speed measurement and attractive routing, Freeridecross is fun for all sports-oriented skiers and boarders – and is all set to be a great winter sports highlight for adventurous kids and families, too.
“Not everyone wants to ski on groomed pistes all day,” says Schneestern founder Dirk Scheumann. “Nowadays ski resorts have to offer their customers diversity and new activities.” Freeriding and freestyle sports are growing in popularity, but they require a good deal of courage and also skill. “After all, not everyone’s a professional. So Freeridecross aims to close this gap,” says Scheumann. Schneestern is the market leader in the production of snow park obstacles and one of the foremost European providers in the planning and implementation of snow parks. Besides, it is involved in numerous Freestyle World Cup activities and large-scale events such as the X-Games in Oslo and the legendary Air + Style. But the company based in Durach in the Allgäu is nothing if not versatile and has now joined forces with its partner skiing areas to develop a concept that provides action programmes for everyone.
Four Freeridecross courses in winter 2016-17
After last winter's pilot projects, the courses at Actionwelt Sudelfeld, Silvretta Montafon, Mottolino/Livigno and Santa Croce/Alta Badia will be extended and improved for the new season. Preparations are already in full swing in all areas, and the season is due to start very soon.
In Silvretta Montafon, Freeridecross at the Freda chairlift provides the perfect addition to this very sporty skiing area. Action lovers will find here the ideal combination of a cross-course and backcountry flow. There are two variants, depending on visitors’ mood. The course at Actionwelt Sudelfeld has been extended over last year’s set-up to include an additional section. It now has a total length of 750 metres from the mountain station of Waldkopfbahn to the entry to the well-known “FRX Section 2” at the Hotel Lift. At Mottolino Fun Mountain in Livigno, Freeridecross likewise supplements the overall concept of the skiing area. Here the motto is: Sports, Action and Freestyle. Freeridecross in Santa Croce probably offers the most scenic setting, nestling in between the Fanes-Sennes-Prags and Puez-Geisler nature parks.
On-piste programmes are supplemented with fun events. The “Family Action Day” is a day for all the family complete with moderation, barbecue, coaching, prizes to be won and much more besides. This is held at Silvretta Montafon on Saturday, 14.01.2017, and at Actionwelt Sudelfeld on Saturday, 21.01.2017. At Actionwelt Sudelfeld there are also plans to hold two other events: the “Challenge” on Sunday, 26.02.2017, is a contest for those who would like to experience the competitive side of Freeridecross complete with starting number, timekeeping and coaching. Meanwhile at “Meet the Pro” on Saturday 18.03.2017, stars of the skiing and snowboarder cross scene will reveal their tips and tricks.
